JPEG - Arguably, the most popular format for web graphics, also self-compresses. The compression ratio can be varied, providing some amount of flexibility in balancing image quality versus file size (the higher the compression percentage, the greater the image quality). Compression ratios down to 10% of the original file size have been achieved without distinguishable loss of quality. If you are planning to use the images exclusively for PC screen viewing (no high quality printing) and need substantial color depth for adequate viewing quality, select the JPEG format.

GIF - This format which was popularized on Compuserve, loads fast and provides automatic file compression for easy storage and retrieval. Among the most widely used formats for web page graphics, it is naturally well suited for utilization with any PC screen based applications or utilities. Small file size provides for faster graphic loading. Compressed file size makes this a popular choice for electronic file transfers. GIF format images are limited to 256 colors which may dictate the use of other formats (most notably, JPEG). If you are planning to use the images exclusively for PC screen viewing (no high quality printing) and don't need color depth greater than 256, this is your choice.

BMP - A common format for a wide range of uses. Most notably used for Windows "wallpaper" and importing to common programs such as word processing documents, spreadsheets, etc. No compression.

TIF - Larger files sizes (approximately the same size as BMP), with excellent quality. Universally recognized format, is avalable for importing to a wide range of applications; good enough for print quality output (NOTE: In general, the resolution for print graphics will be higher than that for exclusive PC screen use.) The use of the optional LZW compression is not recommended due to lack of widespread support among PC applications.

Other Image File Formats

PSD - Format utilized by Adobe Photoshop. Not widely accepted for import to PC applications. The primary use is as native file format for new scans. This facilitates subsequent file modifications from the technical details stored within this file.

PCD - Kodak PhotoCD format.

EPS - Encapsulated Postscript. For use in embedding graphic materials within printed documents. May be output to PC or Mac file format.
